Memorial Day--Destination Idaho, Fort Boise
Boise--In the Boise foothills, there is a throwback to Boise’s calvary post days, a little known, long-forgotten cemetery.
Outside the walls of the old Fort Boise, up the canyon on the reserve, in the foothills, one sees the stone pillars and wrought-iron fence. Then one sees the neat rows of headstones. This is the final resting place for the Fort Boise soldiers.
The earliest graves date from the civil war, the last grave dates 1913. Only a handful of the soldiers buried here were lost in the Indian Wars, most died from scarlet fever, many from the flu. There are a few family members of soldiers, buried here.
The graves are un-watered, there's no irrigation water. The graves are lovingly un-tended and soldiers and families, most forgotten. If you visit Boise, come to the Reserve cemetery, listen to the wind blow, pray for the fallen.
