Idaho Alfalfa

Idaho ranks fourth nationally for production of alfalfa hay. Production has increased in recent years to meet the demand of Idaho's burgeoning dairy industry. Production in the east and south-central areas lead the state. Jefferson County with 98,000 acres of alfalfa is the leading county in the state.

Statewide, growers planted 1.1 million acres in 2006 (the latest year in which statistics are available). The average yield was 4.2 tons per acre.
